Easy, right? Drugs cause addiction. In fact, after thousands of years on Earth, it's possible they could have left absolutely nothing to be found by archeologists today. Their artifacts could have been lost to biological and then geological processes. For the last two million years, most hominins lived as hunter-gatherers, so if these unknown ancestors of ours never moved up higher on the tech tree, hundreds of different species and cultures could have existed without leaving any traces. When we think about how long they existed and how little remains of those we've discovered, it doesn’t seem crazy to think there have been others as well. The ancestors we do know about left fragments of their bodies, weapons and tools and even art. Very likely! We know about ancestors like Homo erectus and cousins like the Neanderthals or Denisovans, but there are probably many more that we haven’t found yet or are lost to time forever. Orbiting Earth every 27 days, at 3600 km/h.Ĭould it be that there are more of our ancestors than we already know about? This is what the Moon does: falling sideways around Earth, very fast, with no air slowing it down. And When you throw a ball, it makes a tiny orbit as well. If there was no air slowing it down, it could orbit forever. If you could throw your ball fast enough, it would bend around the world and come back to you. The only difference between that ball’s orbit and the Moon’s is that the ball eventually hits the ground. In fact, you see orbits every day! Any ball you throw makes a tiny orbit as well. Staying in orbit means moving around the Earth at a certain velocity. An orbit is a curved path in a shape of a circle or an oval. Instead, the trick to staying up is a ‘sideways’ motion that we call an orbit. The truth is, there is no other force countering gravity. But it somehow stays up, as if suspended by some opposite force. We know that Earth’s gravity pulls everything towards it, including the Moon. Our satellites orbit the Earth, and so does the Moon … but what does that even mean?
