![]() ![]() In Winamp on the menu bar click File – Play URL and paste the grabbed URL from above – once playing click connect in the DSP plugin (you can also set it to connect at start up) and the stream should be sent to the SimpleServer You need to then grab the URL for your favoutire BBC station that only comes as a Real Audio stream (radio 1,2,3,4 etc) Start Winamp – open prefences – plugins – DSP/Effect – Configure active plugin (NullSoft Shoutcast Source DSP v1.9.0) – output – click connection ensure that address is localhost and port 8000 (as per SimpleServer) – click yellowpages and ensure that you uncheck public server (important) – click Encoder set to MP3 in the dropdown box and your prefered settings for audio – click Input and set to Winamp Take the defaults (you may want to change the password) The following is a copy of the instructions for making this hack work, which are also contained on the Sonos message boards. Simple Server is server software that you will use to rebroadcast your stream to a new IP address that the Sonos system can understand. You will also need to install some add-ins to Winamp that are described below. If you like it, you can upgrade to a more functional version for a fee. Winamp is media player software that you can download free of charge. This also requires leaving a PC running whenever you want to do this (which for me isn’t an issue because my audio files are served off the same PC. The solution is to set up a server on a computer, re-encode the Real Audio stream as an MP3 stream, and re-stream it to the Sonos system. To be clear, the answer is not simple, and most people won’t want to go through the effort to get it to work. Disclaimer: this is not my work-around, I’m merely posting it here so that others might have an easier time finding it. Until Sonos decides to license Apple’s DRM, the second one is going to continue to be a short coming, but I discovered a work-around to get the Sonos system to be able to play Real Audio streams. Although it can play Internet streams, it can’t play Real Audio streams and it can’t play iTunes DRM files. Although it does a lot, there are a couple of things that it can’t do that would make great additions. It’s easy to operate, and it operates exactly as advertised. I admit, I love my Sonos Digital Music System.
